What is an ASP2 Electrician?
In the state of NSW, an ASP2 electrician is an individual who has undergone additional training and certification to “perform contestable work on the NSW electricity distribution network.” (Source: NSW Government). The acronym refers to an ‘Accredited Service Provider (ASP)’ and someone with this certification is sometimes simply referred to as a Level 2 electrician.
Because of the high-risk nature involved in this work, ASP2 electricians must hold specialised licensing and be authorised by electricity distributors like AusGrid and the NSW Department of Fair Trading.
Regular electricians are legally prohibited from touching any wiring from the meter back to the street—this is exclusively the responsibility of and must be handled by a qualified ASP2 electrician in Sydney.
