WHY CHOOSE US

Electrical issues can happen suddenly, often due to weather or ageing infrastructure. Whether it’s a downed power line or an old meter board needing urgent replacement, Sparky Nearby is here to help. We’re local Level 2 electrical specialists offering certified services beyond standard electricians. Our team is certified by AusGrid and the Department of Fair Trading to handle unprotected mains and electricity meters, resolving your electrical issues safely and efficiently.

Basically, we can work on the power lines that go from the street to your house and then down to your electricity meter. All of these cables are permanently live and cannot be turned off. This means that there are significantly higher requirements for safe work. As such, you need to be an AusGrid certified ASP2 or Level 2 Electrician to work on them

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a highly restricted form of electrical work that is certified directly by AusGrid and the Department of Fair Trading. Standard electricians can’t work on unprotected mains or touch electricity meters.

Level 2 electricians handle a range of specialised electrical jobs beyond the capabilities of standard electricians. These include working on overhead and underground service cables, upgrading main switchboards, and installing private poles and smart meters. Their expertise allows them to ensure the safe and efficient operation of your electrical system, from the point of attachment (POA) to the main switchboard and beyond. Let’s explore the different types of Level 2 electrical work in detail.

A Point of Attachment, commonly known as a POA is a steel hook which connects the service, or supply cable, which runs from the power pole on the street to your home in order to supply your home with power. POAs often rust and need to be replaced as a faulty POA is a safety hazard because your service cable could drop. Or, they could just be too low and the cables need to be higher for safety reasons.

The cost to repair or relocate a point of attachment ranges from $500 to $1500, influenced by factors like job complexity, accessibility, and necessary materials.

Here are the steel power poles that some people have just inside their property boundary and they connect to the public poles on the street. Private Poles are needed for a variety of reasons to connect the supply or service cables from the service pole on the street to the Point Of Attachment on your home. We usually need to install them because your service or supply cables are crossing

Over your neighbour’s property line. This is no longer allowed (even though it used to be and there are thousands of them still like this) but if you get any work done to your electrical system, you will need to rectify this defect. Luckily Sparky Nearby can help by installing a new private pole at the front of your property and then running a new consumer mains cable underground, or overhead through the air to your main switchboard.

Service cables, also commonly called supply cables, are the cables that run overhead from the power pole on the street to the point of attachment or POA on your house. Installation prices range from $500 to $2,000. depending on complexity and length of installation.

These are a supply cable just like the overhead service cables but, you guessed it, they run underground. This is usually an upgrade so people do not have to see a big supply cable running in front of their home.

Consumer mains, also known as con mains, are the cables that connect the power from your service cable down to the Main Switchboard to supply your home with power.

Smart meter upgrades are another common task for us. This is when we replace an old spinning disc analogue meter for a new “smart” electronic meter. These meters have a sim card chip in them which means you won’t have a meter reader poking around your property and you’ll also have fast and accurate meter readings. These also allow you to feed electricity back into the grid from your solar system.

Installation costs range between $1,000 to $3,000, however, many factors must be considered such as the number of circuits along with any additional features.

Main Switchboard Enclosures are another really common job that level 2 electricians often do. Switchboard enclosures can be substandard for a number of reasons including, not being fire rated, weather proof or made of asbestos. Switchboards are one of the main causes of house fires so it is extremely important that switchboard enclosures are made of the appropriate material and wired correctly to stop and potential fire from spreading. Timber switchboard Enclosures are not only not fire rated, but they can also rot out and degrade over time from the weather, making them not weather proof. This can lead to leaks, which can be highly dangerous in your electrical switchboard.

I spoke to Tom who sent Claire out to install a new exhaust fan after the very old one finally died. Claire arrived on time and in less than 20 minutes had the new fan installed. She left the bathroom clean and even took the old fan away. Job done quickly and at a reasonable price. New fan works perfectly. I recommend Sparky Nearby who has also completed jobs at my church with the same efficiency.
