Situations When You Need an ASP2/ Level 2 Electrician

Tom on the Level 2 Job

Many homeowners in Sydney have their own trusted electrician who can complete many general tasks on their house. However, when it comes to electrical work that involves the main switchboard, metering or the supply cables from your street, you need a specialist electrician called a Level 2 Electrician, otherwise known as an ASP2 Electrician.

Here are some situations where you might need ASP2/Level 2 electrical contractors.

What is an ASP2/Level 2 Electrician?

An ASP 2/Level 2 Electrician is an electrician who has done additional training to become accredited with AusGrid to work on their powerlines and meters. This is especially hard and dangerous work as there is no way to turn the power off to safely work on wires.

Why Would You Need An ASP2/Level 2 Electrician?

1. Emergency Repairs

These are the most common calls we get relating to level 2/ ASP2. Usually during heavy rains or winds when a power line has fallen down, or a switchboard has become flooded with water and shorted out.

2. Overhead Service Cables

The supply cables from the street poles to your house may need replacing because they’re falling down or because they need to be bigger to allow more current to supply your home for more appliances.

3. Underground Service Cables

These are supply cables from the street that run underground to your house. These are only in some suburbs in Sydney, but they also take another specific licence to work on, which we at Sparky Nearby have.

4. Point Of Attachment

The hook at the font of the building where your supply cable connects to, sometimes rusts or rots away and needs to be replaced. This is a job for an ASP2/ Level 2 Electrician.

5. Burnt Out Old Switchboards

There are still lots of old switchboards in use around Sydney that are over 50 years old. Regularly we get called out to replace these old boards which eventually can burn out or catch fire. You need an electrician of Level 2 to replace the whole switchboard as there is metering inside it. A regular electrician is not licensed to replace the whole switchboard, they can only upgrade fuses. If you need to replace the whole board and waterproof enclosure around it, you will need an ASP2 /Level 2 Electrician.

6. Upgrade Main Switchboard / Meter Board

If your main switchboard contains electricity meters then you will need to get an ASP2/ Level 2 Electrician to carry out the replacement as standard electricians cannot remove and reinstall the electricity meters.

7. Smart Meter Installation

If you have an old spinning disc meter, you now need to upgrade it to a smart meter if you do any work to your switchboard. Many people think this means you need to pay more for electricity, but this is not the case. If you have any concerns about this, give us a call, and we’ll explain the issue and why it does not apply.

8. Private Pole Installations

If your power wire from the street crosses over your neighbour’s property, you may need to install a private power pole out the front of your house. Sparky Nearby can assist you with this process.

9. Removing Unsightly Power Cables

Have you got ugly power cables running across a beautiful view in front of your house? Sparky Nearby can assist with running the cables underground from the street to remove that unsightly supply cable.

10. Disconnect and Reconnect

We often get asked by other trades to disconnect power from the street to the building in order to safely work near the power lines. This often happens when a timber fascia board that the cables run to rot out and needs to be replaced. The carpenter will call us in order to disconnect and remove the cables, so they can safely replace the fascia. Then, once the work is done, we come back and reinstall the supply cable.
